Marken and Volendam
Ports of call for the sailing fleet
Tips for a visit:
Monnickendam lies directly on the Gouwzee. At a short distance from our home port lie the historic fishing ports of Marken and Volendam. After a wonderful sailing trip with one of the ships of our fleet, both fishing villages are beautiful locations for a stopover or as a final destination.
Marken
The former island of Marken has been connected to the rest of Waterland by a dike since 1957. In spite of the dike, a real island feeling still prevails here. Time seems to stand still here, with a conservation area village, the beautiful historic homes on stilts, and the characteristic green and white painted wooden facades. On Marken you can take a guided walk with a guide in folk costume. You can also go back in time by taking a look inside the House of Sijtje Boes at the harbour or by visiting the Marker Museum. You can also wander about the yards in peace, and include a visit to a traditional clog factory. The area around the lighthouse `t Paard (the horse) van Marken is wonderful for stretching your legs and enjoying the landscape and beautiful views across the water.
Volendam
The fishing village Volendam is also worth a visit from Monnickendam. The village is home to many famous bands and singers, both in the Netherlands and abroad. De Dijk (dike, hartbour front) of Volendam is a lovely place to stretch your legs, have a drink, eat some fried fish or have your picture taken in the typical folk costume that has come to mean “Holland” worldwide.
Next to the original harbour is a new marina, with quaint sleeping and dining facilities, like the Hotel Marinapark Volendam.
