The WON119 provides all the space for a party of up to 12 people. The spacious, open cockpit and the large front deck provide plenty of outdoor space. The cosy front-cabin with wood stove provides a good place for guests to stay during unfavourable weather. The flat-bottomed ship meets all modern requirements of comfort and safety, whilst maintaining its original and rugged looks. The guests will want for nothing when it comes to food and drink. The skippers cook themselves, and they like to surprise their guests with special snacks and dishes.
Sailing on the WON 119 is a unique experience. Everything is done by hand, just like fishermen did a hundred years ago. Therefore, collaboration is essential. At the same time, you can always find a wee corner to enjoy the spectacle from, with a beer or glass of wine in hand.
The WON 119 (nicknamed ‘Titanic’), is a traditional Dutch flat-bottomed boat, and the only fishing vessel in the Monnickendam Sailing Fleet. WON stands for Wonseradeel, a municipality in Friesland. WON 119 is the registration number of the original fishermen, the Poepjes family. She is a special lemsteraak (Lemmer barge), built in 1908 by the famous shipbuilder Auke van der Zee from Joure, and very large for her time. The WON 119 is an official National Sailing Monument, as classified by the Dutch Sailing Heritage Federation.
Martin Tanis and Moniek Buijzen bought the lemsteraak in very poor condition in 2008. To save the ship, they renovated her fully, and restored her to her former glory. This makes that, on this remarkable ship, well over one hundred years of tradition meet the needs of the 21st century. Martin and Moniek share a great knowledge of the ship, of sailing and of the IJsselmeer. They have a personal approach and they like to consult with the guests about their wishes and the itinerary.
