The clipper Umoja is without doubt the largest ship in the Monnickendam sailing Fleet, and one of the biggest ships in the Dutch historical fleet. With her 46 metres, the ship can easily accommodate 30-120 people. Decor-wise, the ship is nothing like most of the other ships in the fleet. The sleek, modern interior offers a completely different marine experience. Umoja stands for “Together, Connection and Unity.” The word from Swahili is characteristic of the ship, which is often used for weddings, (company) parties and team sessions.
The two-master Umoja was originally a cargo vessel. She was converted into a sailing ship in 1985. The clipper is especially designed for day trips and group outings with larger groups. Below deck she is furnished as a lounge area and restaurant, with lots of seating, a trendy bar and all-round sight of the water line. The very large hold and flexible layout offers numerous possibilities. The ship -also a wedding venue in Waterland and Durgerdam, near Amsterdam- can, for example, provide a separate space for a wedding ceremony, while the reception can take place in the other room. For training and meetings a group of 30 to 50 people is recommended for optimum use of the available space. Of course there is plenty of space on deck, with lots of seating and standing room. This safe and spacious sailing ship is an ideal place for a wonderful day’s sailing in a fantastic area.
The two-master Umoja is the latest sailing vessel in owner Remco Voorneveld’s fleet, added in 2014. Previously, he had purchased the two-masters “Vrijheid” and “Avontuur”. All in all he can offer a unique sailing experience to more than 225 people with these three ships, focusing on luxury combined with sailing.
